Prostate Biopsy
A prostate biopsy is a relatively simple procedure of short duration usually taking no more than half an hour. The procedure may be somewhat uncomfortable but is rarely painful.
There is usually no reason not to resume all normal activities. Including sexual activity and heavy lifting. If an activity causes bleeding, hold off on that activity for a few days.
A certain amount of blood in stools, urine and semen is normal following a prostate biopsy, and the amount and duration is very variable.
As instructed by your physician, if you experience fevers, chills and simply don’t feel well after the procedure you should immediately go to the nearest Emergency Room and have them call us from there.
Preparation:
- A clean rectum is necessary for this procedure. Please purchase a Fleet’s enema from your pharmacy and utilize it at least 2-3 hours prior to the above appointment time. Do not eat after completing the enema.
- You will be given Rx for antibiotics Levaquin 500mg and Ceftin 500 mg or different antibiotics if you are allergic to any of these antibiotics. Please start taking the antibiotics two days before your procedure and continue taking for three more days after the procedure.
- Please stop any blood thinning medication and/or aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs (such as, Advil, Naprosyn, etc.) three days before your procedure. If a pain killer of analgesic is needed, an acetaminophen such as Tylenol can be taken. Please consult with your prescribing Physician before stopping any medication.
CANCELLATIONS SHOULD BE MADE 3 BUSINESS DAYS IN ADVANCE TO AVOID A $200 LATE CANCELLATION FEE.
