Dr. Michael Grant has served the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area as a board-certified urologist for more than 25 years — a career that spans the transformative transition from open surgical techniques to the robotic era that now defines modern urological care. A native of Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Grant completed his undergraduate education at Georgetown University with high distinction, earned his M.D. at George Washington University where he was inducted into the Sigma Xi Honor Society, and completed his urology residency training at Johns Hopkins Hospital — one of the most competitive and academically rigorous urology programs in the country.
Innovation has been the defining characteristic of Dr. Grant's career from its outset. He was instrumental in introducing laparoscopic urology to the Washington, D.C. region in the late 1990s, building the technical foundation that led him to establish the Robotic Surgery Program at National Medical Center in 2004 — the first such program in the entire Mid-Atlantic region. In doing so, he performed the region's inaugural robotic prostatectomy, and rapidly became a nationally recognized authority in robotic urological oncology and reconstructive surgery. His early clinical series documenting the safety, efficacy, and functional outcomes of the robotic approach contributed materially to the evidence base that established robotics as the standard of care for prostate cancer surgery in the United States.
Dr. Grant's academic contributions span more than 25 peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and national conference presentations covering robotic surgery outcomes, oncological efficacy, and functional recovery following major urological procedures. During his tenure at National Medical Center, he served as Vice Chairman of Urology and Clinical Director of Urologic Robotic Surgery — roles that enabled him to train hundreds of residents, fellows, and visiting surgeons while simultaneously building a high-volume clinical practice. He continues to hold the title of Clinical Professor of Urology at NMC, maintaining the academic engagement that keeps his clinical practice firmly grounded in current evidence.
While robotic surgical expertise is the cornerstone of Dr. Grant's reputation, his practice has deliberately evolved to meet the full breadth of patient needs. Recognized as a Washingtonian Top Doctor within two years of entering independent practice — and named to that list continuously since — Dr. Grant has earned the confidence of both patients and colleagues through consistent, reproducible outcomes.
In recent years, Dr. Grant has continued to evolve his surgical portfolio in response to emerging technologies and patient needs. He has developed particular expertise in robotic vasectomy reversal — applying the precision of the da Vinci system to microsurgical anastomosis of the vas deferens, achieving patency rates that compete with dedicated microsurgical approaches. His men's health practice has deepened considerably, encompassing the comprehensive assessment and treatment of erectile dysfunction following prostate cancer therapy, incontinence management using advanced sling and artificial sphincter technology, and both pharmacological and procedural management of BPH for prostates of all sizes. Now teamed with a skilled Urology Nurse Practitioner, his practice also focuses intensely on availability and helping patients with simpler problems such as milder forms of ED, urinary tract infections, and other office-based Urologic problems. For instance, Dr. Grant performs more vasectomies than any other physician in the area and has performed over 1000 office-based minimally invasive BPH treatments.
